Is that picture beautiful or what? You can almost smell the incredible aroma coming from what is truly a magnificent botanical. Native to South Africa, Rose Geranium is identified by the specific botanical name Pelargonium graveolens var. roseum. Despite sharing virtually all the same qualities of geranium, Rose Geranium is the type most often preferred for its scent as it is reputed to emit the strongest, most superior notes of Rose, the floral nuance that contributes to its uplifting effect on the mood.

Along with Sandalwood from Australia, Rose Geranium oil in our #23 collection is one of our more expensive botanicals, but once tried, you'll be back for more. Its exquisite aroma is something that every essential oil fan should try at least once. The process for harvesting and producing the oil is delicate, and that can drive up the cost season by season.

The essential oil is steam-distilled from the flowers, leaves, and stalks of the plant (also known as the aerial parts). We purchase and distribute Rose Geranium from one of the biggest producers in the globe. We do the hard work, so you can enjoy this incredible botanical.

HISTORY AND BENEFITS OF ROSE GERANIUM

Rose geranium oil is an active ingredient in some cosmetic products, like lotions and fragrances. A 2017 review of studies demonstrated that antioxidant properties in rose geranium oil may help reduce the signs of aging. See the botanical blog and scientific study titled 'A Novel Therapeutic Agent for Antibacterial, Antioxidant, Antifungal and Diabetics'

Antioxidants are well-established as natural agents for improving your skin’s ability to heal itself from environmental toxins and exposure. Think of rose geranium as the Great Balancer - of skin, of hormones, of moods.

Rose geranium oils were used in remedies for burns and other topical ailments. For centuries, they were also largely used to soothe respiratory ailments, such as coughs and tuberculosis, as well as gastritis and dysentery. In the 17th century, after being introduced to European countries, it came to be commonly used as a protective medium around households, as it was believed to have shielding properties that could ward off evil spirits.

Rose Geranium Essential Oil’s earthy and herbaceous aroma are known to have a soothing sedative effect that promotes greater feelings of relaxation, emotional stability, and optimism. These balancing qualities make this oil’s crisp scent beneficial for those who may be suffering from fatigue, anxiety, restlessness, tension, and grief. Some users may find that this oil has an energizing effect instead. It is believed that by regulating hormones, Rose Geranium Oil helps to improve symptoms of menstruation and menopause.

It is also a very effective oil to use in a natural insect repellent formula, along with citronella and lemongrass.

Aromatherapy:

Rose Geranium is used to calm anxiety and other nervous conditions and lift the spirits. It can be useful in depression and during mood swings related to hormonal shifts. It is both soothing and energizing, and works beautifully to create positive energy when used in a diffuser with a citrus-like bergamot or sweet orange.

Cosmetically:

Rose Geranium is suitable for all skin types, and seems to be soothing and balancing when used in proper concentrations on the skin. It has been studied by the medical community in the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions and infections, and has shown promise for future investigations. It balances sebum, which makes it very useful for skin that is very oily or very dry, or otherwise not in balance. Diluted rose geranium essential oils can be applied to skin as an astringent that tightens, brightens, and removes dead skin cells. It can also be used as a soothing and antimicrobial topical agent to help treat bacterial acne.

Rose Geranium Oil is reputed to balance the skin’s natural oil production, minimize the appearance of enlarged pores, eliminate infection-causing or acne-causing bacteria, enhance circulation, reduce the appearance of varicose veins, thread veins, cellulite, and dull skin, encourage the body’s relaxation, deodorize, promote the faster fading of scars and blemishes, soothe uncomfortable skin ailments, and generally rejuvenate the complexion.

Medicinally:

The scent of rose from the rose flower has been shown to enhance relaxation, offer pain relief, and soothe anxiety in a clinical setting. It’s unclear if it’s the scent itself, memories of the scent, or a chemical agent in the scent which creates this chemical reaction in your brain. Rose Geranium Oil is reputed to help reduce the discomforts of musculoskeletal ailments and skin conditions characterized by inflammation, to facilitate the body’s detoxification, and to protect abrasions from developing infections while also helping them to heal faster.

Some weight loss and body building supplements include rose geranium oil as an “active ingredient.”

Rose Geranium Oil works as a hemostatic that helps stem the flow of blood when applied to minor wounds, bites, sores, and other abrasions.

Hair:

The high content of antioxidants in Rose Geranium essential oil will repair and nourish your hair from the inside out. Antioxidants fight free radicals that often accumulate in the hair cells from exposure to pollution, excessive sunlight and chemicals used to wash and treat your hair. Rose Geranium acts as a barrier to these free radicals, resulting in healthy, radiant locks. Add a few drops of Rose Geranium Essential Oil to your current shampoo and conditioner, it will leave your hair beautifully shiny and healthy. Check out the hair recipes on the botanical blog using Rose Geranium.
