Wintergreen Essential Oil, sometimes called Gaultheria Oil, is derived from the leaves of the Wintergreen herb, also known as Teaberry, Partridge Berry, and Checkerberry.
Wintergreen is an herb. Wintergreen oil is made by the steam processing of warmed, water-soaked Wintergreen leaves. The leaves and oil are used to make medicine.
The chemical name of Aspirin is acetyl salicylic acid and it is a synthetic derivative of salicylic acid. Wintergreen essential oil is 96-99% methyl salicylate, an ester that can be toxic when not used with great care. Salicylates are known to be pain relievers and blood thinners. Though both Aspirin and Wintergreen come from salicylates, Wintergreen is much stronger.

Wintergreen Essential Oil is praised for its ability to reduce pain and inflammation.
However, it must be used sparingly and with great caution as numerous reports of poisoning have occurred.
HISTORY AND BENEFITS OF WINTERGREEN
The wintergreen plant has been used as a healing medicine in North America for thousands of years. Native Americans used the juice of wintergreen leaves to treat painful conditions like rheumatism, arthritis, and ulcers; they also chewed the leaves on long-distance runs to increase their endurance and breathing capacity. When European settlers arrived in North America, they absorbed some of this indigenous medicinal knowledge. Wintergreen leaves quickly became popular in the colonies as a stimulant and a prophylactic against toothache.
During the Revolutionary War when black tea was too expensive, American soldiers maintained their energy for marching by drinking a tea made of wintergreen berries instead.
