Essential Oils work... MrandMrsNurse have posted several evidence based studies to support this fact however, there's tremendous amounts of misinformation out there, and if you 'follow the money' you can normally see where it leads...

We would imagine that most people reading this post will understand the concept of market share, but if not, let's define it before we move on...
'Market Share is the portion of a market controlled by a particular company or product"
Let's go back in history...
Ancient Egypt was the true birthplace of essential oils, or ‘aromatherapy’ as we know it today. The Egyptians cultivated plants for their oils and used them extensively in their religion, in cosmetics as well as for medicinal purposes. Aromatic essence and resins were also used in the embalming process.

It is thought that most essential oils were produced in Egypt by a type of solvent extraction method (enfleurage) using animal fat – however, distillation “pots” have also been found dating back about 3,500 BC.
Around the same time, China and India were exploring herbs and aromatic plants too, which would become an integral part of the Indian Ayurvedic medical system.
The wisdom of the Egyptians was absorbed by the ancient Greeks: the most well-known physician of that time, Hippocrates (c.460-377 BC) was a firm believer in treating a patient holistically and included massage in many of his therapies.
Romans, in turn adopted the Greek’s knowledge and were great believers in hygiene to promote health – aromatic baths being especially popular. (FGB Natural Products)

The term “aromatherapy” as it is known today was first coined
in 1937 by the French chemist and perfumer Rene Maurice
Gattefosse.
He was not a believer in the natural health movement but was interested in the properties essential oils exhibited.
Moments in Time
In 1910 Monsieur Gattefosse burnt his hand badly in his laboratory, and being the first compound available, he treated his hand with pure undiluted lavender oil. This not only immediately eased the pain, but helped heal the hand without any sign of infection or scarring.

The modern pharmaceutical industry traces its origin to two sources: apothecaries that moved into wholesale production of drugs such as morphine, quinine, and strychnine in the middle of the 19th century and dye and chemical companies that established research labs and discovered medical applications for their products starting in the 1880s. Merck, for example, began as a small apothecary shop in Darmstadt, Germany, in 1668, only beginning wholesale production of drugs in the 1840s. Likewise, Schering in Germany; Hoffmann-La Roche in Switzerland; Burroughs Wellcome in England; Etienne Poulenc in France; and Abbott, Smith Kline, Parke-Davis, Eli Lilly, Squibb, and Upjohn in the U.S. all started as apothecaries and drug suppliers between the early 1830s and late 1890s.
Other firms whose names carry recognition today began with the production of organic chemicals (especially dyestuffs) before moving into pharmaceuticals. These include Agfa, Bayer, and Hoechst in Germany; Ciba, Geigy, and Sandoz in Switzerland; Imperial Chemical Industries in England; and Pfizer in the U.S. (American Chemical Society)
Now let's follow the money...
Who reading this blog believed pharmaceutical companies would have wanted to lose market share and billions of dollars to marijuana if it were to become main stream in treating chronic and acute sickness, and who believes they would want essential oils becoming the same problem to them?
(CNN) One lobbying group for the pharmaceutical industry spent about $27.5 million on lobbying activities in 2018, federal filings show.
In 2015, Big Pharma spent $5.4 billion on ads that targeted consumers, Kantar Media reported. In return, Americans spent $457 billion on prescription drugs, Drug Watch reported.
The global pharmaceutical market has experienced significant growth in recent years. As of 2018 the total global pharmaceutical market is valued at about 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars. (Statista.com)
Pharma and alcohol companies have been quietly bankrolling the opposition to legal marijuana, raising questions about threats to market share (The Guardian.com)
Pharmaceutical company Insys spent $500,000 to block legalization in Arizona. Five months later it won approval for a cannabis-derived medical drug
A recent report found that Big Pharma stands to lose as much as $4 billion per year if medical marijuana became legal in all 50 states. The information is based off a study from 2016 by the University of Georgia, which found that states with legalized medicinal cannabis had less Medicare prescriptions than those where it's still illegal. The study found that already pharmaceutical companies are losing $166 million annually on drugs where marijuana is now offered as an alternative.
and they're at it again, the pattern continues now with Essential Oils.
In 2015 the FDA, who is basically controlled by the pharmaceutical companies demanded that essential oil distributors stop sharing the truth of how effective oils can be at healing and curing diseases. If applying lavender oil works clearing up some facial acne, they can no longer tell others that the oil healed or cured the acne. They can only say things like… lavender oil “supports” the body’s natural ability to maintain skin tone.
Meanwhile thousands of people continue to die each year from following the directions on their prescription medicine bottles…..all approved by the FDA to be safe. How many times have you laughed at a television advertisement for a drug that tells you it's great for your headache, but the side effects are so horrendous that the final one liner from the voice over or paid actor is... 'and can cause death!!'
Remember these are drugs APPROVED by the FDA on behalf of the pharmaceutical companies.
MrandMrsNurse could find hundreds, no thousands of articles about the power of pharmaceutical companies. Now please understand, as Registered Nurses we have nothing against pharmaceutical companies... They invest billions in drug development and many drugs save millions upon millions of lives each and every day, but they are by no means perfect or without fault and they exist to make their shareholders happy and rich...
This is not a blog about 'hating' pharmaceutical companies, this is an informational piece on the history of botanicals, and we urge readers to use every one of their skill sets to research and understand that money plays an essential role (pardon the pun) in what you are told, and what you are 'supposed' to believe by powerful entities shaping the conversation and argument...
For centuries essential oils have been effective in healing and helping human beings - way, way before pharmaceutical companies industrialized and became the powerhouses they are today..
There is a legitimate place for alternative medicine, and there have been stunning breakthroughs in the use of marijuana and essential oils - both have worthy places in peoples lives, especially those among us that want to use natural, rather than chemically produced products.
Research published in the March 2018 issue of the European Journal of Medicine showed the effectiveness of cannabis treatment over a six month period. When it was used in over 2,700 patients aged 65 or older, overall improvement in pain was noted by 93.7% of them. Patients reported “less use of prescription pain medicines including opioids”

So, here's the bottom line. Essential Oils have been used and have been effective since 3500BC. Pharmaceutical companies have billions and billions of dollars, they have huge power and reach, they can destroy any industry they want. They can pay thousands of bloggers, have irrational and false articles written in widely read magazines, and virtually do anything they want to as they place fear and distrust into the public arena.
Don't believe us? Look what they did with the marijuana industry - for decades they attempted to destroy what we now know is a legitimate industry and has a place in medical research helping millions of people where traditional medications have failed...
MrandMrsNurse have witnessed first hand the medical benefits of marijuana on veterans and civilians alike. Are we starting the obvious when we write why would another industry attempt to destroy another one? Is it too obvious to just say..... Market Share + Follow the $$$$
Here's where common sense comes in. How many things do you know that have been around and stood the test of time like Essential Oils? Do they work on everyone? Of course not, but neither do pharmaceutical drugs, approved by the FDA.
Note: Each and every one of us react in different ways, and that's why working with a certified aromatherapist and using specific oils is critically important. When you're sick or injured, there are numerous ways to ease pain and to heal. Today hospitals all over the world are using Essential Oils,
We will continue to post articles and links, many are evidence based, so you can make an educated decision about if essential oils are right for you.
