Thriving in oceanic climates with dry, rocky, sandy terrain, Lavender can be found in the Mediterranean region, Europe, Africa, the Canary Islands, the Middle East, and India.

Lavender purposes according to ancient texts range from medicinal to religious, having been used to clean cuts and to soothe bruises and skin irritations, as well as to scent the air for spiritual practices.
HISTORY AND BENEFITS OF LAVENDER
The ancient Greeks called Lavender nardus, after the Syrian city of Naarda and was commonly called Nard. Lavender was one of the holy herbs used to prepare the Holy Essence and Nard, or ‘spikenard’ is mentioned in the bible in the ‘Song of Solomon’ among other places. Lavender is a flowering plant of the mint family known for its beauty, its sweet floral fragrance and its multiple uses.
Lavender Oil is extracted from the flower tops using steam distillation. Lavender has calming effects on the body and mind, reducing stress, anxiety, as well as hysteria. Because of its antiseptic properties it can be used to heal minor wounds, cuts, bee stings, and protects against minor infections throughout the body. Lavender can also aid in reducing blood pressure, sleep aid, varicose veins, relieves sunburns, stretch marks, cellulite, dry skin, dandruff, and spasms in the muscles. Its ability to reduce emotional stress such as anxiety and its potency in alleviating headaches also extends to its ability to reduce feelings of motion sickness and to improve the mood. It is believed that Lavender can reduce symptoms of hay fever when inhaled deeply.
Aromatherapy:
Use three to four drops of Lavender in a diffuser or diffuser jewelry of your choice. Treat yourself to this well-loved aroma by adding a few drops of oil to lotions, shampoos, and skin care products. Inhale the fragrance and scent receptors in the brain’s emotional powerhouse process the smell as calming, allowing the brain and body to relax. A few drops smoothed onto a pillow may promote faster onset of deeper sleep with a decreased number of sleep disturbances.
Cosmetically:
Lavender oil moisturizes chapped and aging skin. Its anti-septic and anti-fungal properties may help to reduce itching and swelling caused by insect bites. Known to have anti-microbial properties, it provides soothing relief to minor burns and cuts, decreasing pain and inhibiting bleeding while eliminating bacteria from the wound. Lavender is known to be an anti-septic that effectively eliminates lice, nits, and dandruff when rubbed into the scalp.
Medicinally:
Lavender aids in healing of burns and wounds. Helps with anxiety and emotional stress, as well as inducing sleep and relaxation. Lavender oils are used for internal medical conditions, among others indigestion and heartburn. Lavender oil is said to soothe headaches, migraines and motion sickness when applied to the temples.
Uses:
As a spray, Lavender acts as a natural perfume and a non-toxic air freshener that creates a relaxing atmosphere, especially for the bedroom. In the bathroom, it can be sprayed onto towels for a fresh and calming scent.
Dilute with a carrier oil to unwind with a Lavender-infused neck or back massage. Dilute 1 drop of Lavender oil with 1 teaspoon of carrier oil (increase or decrease based on preference/sensitivity) then apply to desired area as needed.
Troubling thoughts and feelings can plague us all one time or another, and Lavender is a wonderful choice when we need to calm our mind down. It is known to have an immediate calming effect when inhaled or applied topically; dilute to 2-5% with your favorite carrier oil and massage onto your feet, temples, wrists, or hands to help settle a nervous or overactive mind that is causing you distress.
Don’t let allergies get you down – Lavender is known to reduce inflammation, strengthen your body against allergens, and reduce painful symptoms from allergies, like swelling or pressure. Lavender contains linalool, which can have anti-inflammatory actions that may help relieve tissue congestion.
Healthy hair isn’t easy for a lot of us to maintain. Using Lavender Essential Oil may not be the miracle hair growth serum you’re dreaming about, but it sure does have properties that promote healthy hair – plus it smells fantastic! For healthy hair, a healthy scalp is necessary; diluting this oil to 1% in your favorite carrier oil and massaging it onto your scalp can increase circulation, allowing your body to deliver more of all those wonderful vitamins and nutrients that fuel healthy hair growth.
